Features: Adidas have followed a similar theme to last season in designing a dark football shirt with bright details. This season however they have gone darker and brighter.

A smart pin-stripe black background makes the orange details stand out. Details include the club badge, Adidas logo and Samsung sponsorship lettering.

The away shirts also follow the same black colour with the Chelsea badge in an orange form. The socks are also black, featuring the Chelsea lion and Adidas three stripes when turned down.

Home, Away or third?

If you have been browsing around you may have noticed more than one Chelsea shirt, shorts and socks. In fact Chelsea have no less than six different kits in any one season. This provides great choice, with a range of styles and colours.

The home kit is always blue. It is worn in most games played by Chelsea. It is the most popular of the shirts by far.

The away kit for this season is a slick black design shaded blue square details. This shirt is worn in away games where blue would clash with the home team.

The third kit this season is quite a controversial design in white and black with a yellow band. This kit is worn where both home and away shirts will clash with the home team. It is fair to say that this shirt is worn less frequently. However, if the colour and style match your tastes then go for it.

In addition to the three above, there are three goalkeeping strips. Worn by Peter Cech these are typically bold and bright colours. A great choice if the Chelsea fan is a goalkeeping fanatic.

Which shirt you choose is down to your personal preference. Whilst at Stamford Bridge you will see a sea of blue (home shirt), it is good to stand out from the crowd. Go with whatever shirt you like the look of.

This season or last season?

Yep there is even more choice. The current season shirts will be worn in the 2011/12 season. That means a new Chelsea shirt and kit will be released next season. It also means that there are still previous season shirts available.

You can pick up last season shirts incredibly cheap. Whilst the normal price of a shirt is £40 for an Adult mens. You can pick up the last season’s shirts for as little as £20. Of course, the availability of sizes will be limited.

However, try going back a couple of seasons or more and you will find the shirts expensive. It is not uncommon to find 2002/03 shirts for over £100. This shows how Chelsea shirts in new or excellent condition at least maintain their value. Remember in future years, they will become retro shirts. In years where Chelsea had great success, they will become particularly valuable.

Whether you choose to buy the current season shirt or last seasons, it doesn’t really matter. Next time you go to Stamford Bridge or watch Match of the Day, notice the large number of Chelsea fans wearing older shirts. If you prefer the style of a previous shirt then buy that one.

Know your size

Chelsea has a very large supporter base. All ages and all genders are able to buy a Chelsea shirt or complete kit.

It is common for all outfield shirts (so home, away and third) to be available in short and long-sleeve. The goalkeeper shirt is commonly long- sleeve.

If you want a complete kit then you will need to buy the shirt, shorts and socks separately. However, for younger fans, complete kits are available (mainly because they grown out of them so quickly!).

With Adidas as their current kit supplier, the Chelsea shirts are available in the following sizes.

Adult Mens: small, medium, large, XL and XXL.

Adult Mens outsize: 3XL, 4XL, 5XL, 6XL, 7XL and 8XL.

Womens: 8, 10, 12, 14 and 15.

Kids: ages 8, 10, 12 and 14.

Infants: from ages 3 up to 6.

Baby: from age 6 months to 24 months.

Optional extras

Instead of walking around with a shirt the same as every other Chelsea fan, personalise it a little.

Take Care

As mentioned above, Chelsea shirts and kits may be viewed as an investment. So you want to keep your shirt looking great.

It is likely to become your favourite and most worn shirt. Luckily the shirt, shorts and socks are easy to wash, dry quickly and require little if no ironing. However, take care not to use fabric softener when washing. It can cause the printing to peel away and can begin to look like a well-worn shirt very quickly.

When you buy new shirts, try to keep hold of your older ones. If they are in a good condition (so no horrible peeling and no stains!) they can become rather valuable in future years.

We recently received a question from Lisa who was looking for a retro shirt for her boss who was an avid Chelsea fan and she wanted some pointers on what shirt to choose.

Choose a landmark year

This could be the year that the person was born, the year they went to their first Chelsea game or a year they remember well for the success that Chelsea had in that year.

Ask some probing questions, such as ‘Have you been to Stamford Bridge? Oh, really – when did you first go?’. Or ask their colleagues, friends or family who may know about or share his interest in football.

Do they have any posters, pictures or screensavers that may give you some indication? For example, a picture of Chelsea lifting the FA Cup in 1970.

Choose a favourite design or colour

Not all Chelsea shirts are blue and indeed not all Chelsea fan’s favourite colour is blue. There are white, red and yellow Chelsea retro shirts available (amongst others). So, if the persons favourite colour is yellow then take a look at yellow retro shirts.

There are a number of fits available such as crew neck, v-neck and polo collar. There are also various designs such as horizontal stripes and vertical stripes. What type of leisure clothing does the intended recepient normally wear?

If you are clubbing together then maybe narrow your search down to a few shirts and take a vote.

Follow the crowd

When purchasing a Chelsea shirt online try to get as much information about the company as you can, for example can you give them a call or do they have a physical contact address (preferably in the UK)? Reputable online retailers such as Kitbag display their phone number on their homepage.

Use internet search engines to do a search on the company/website and read customer reviews. Take note of the comments closely and consider whether they could have been posted by the company selling the fake shirts themselves.

Look out for elements of the shirt that indicate that it is an official team product. For example, the current Chelsea shirt has a security badge.

After much anticipation and rumours as to the new design, the Chelsea home kit 10/11 was officially released on 6 May 2010.

When you first look at this kit, one thing stands out. Red. Yes, red. The same colour as fierce rivals Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United.

However, after delving into the accompanying information you realise it is actually there for a very good reason. It is to represent Chelsea’s most loyal and oldest supporters – the Chelsea pensioners. Indeed in years gone by Chelsea have featured snippets of red on their home shirts and a number of their away shirts were also red.

The shirt is as stylish as previous seasons. In fact the red compliments the shirt very well and works nicely with the white v-neck design.

There is only so much you can do with a shirt that predominately has to be blue and Adidas have done well. They released a ‘made 100% from Chelsea‘ campaign with this shirt with an impressive collage of Chelsea influences that went in to designing this shirt.

The fact that the shorts are essentially the same as last season demonstrates that the main focus was on creating a shirt that was different and stands out.

The kit has been generally well received with the presence of red being the main discussion point (unsurprisingly). Roman Soldier commented on a Metro article that “I love the strip… I think the red is a great idea. It not only symbolizes the pensioners, but it represents blood and the colours of Arsenal Man Utd and Liverpool who we would have scalped this season if we win the premiership”.

However, there have been some less positive comments including Montag, who feels “Sceptical about the red” (EPL Talk article).

As in previous seasons you can buy the shirt for all ages. Right from new born up to 8XL. Yes, that really is XXXXXXXXL!

You can also personalise the shirt a little, so you don’t look the same as every other Chelsea fan. Add your name and number or that of your favourite player. Plus, celebrate Chelsea’s 09/10 success by adding Champions badges on the arms.

Overall, it is a decent attempt by Adidas to create something different. They have worked hard to make a shirt that is both stylish and cultural.

The Men’s Chelsea home shirt 10/11 is available in sizes small, medium, large, XL, XXL. For larger shirts then go for the outsize.
